Through the courses of the Institute, I have learnt a lot about daily work and attitudes of early childhood educators. The programme curriculum design is practical that theoretical knowledge and internship supplement with each other and enable me to truly apply what I have learned. At the same time, the programme is also very distinctive. It does not only allow students to understand the routines of mainstream kindergartens, but also special education institutions. This broaden my career path after graduation. On the other hand, the lecturers are very professional. They are willing to share experiences, answer questions and guide me to think in multiple perspectives. To conclude, the whole learning process helps me in personal development and learning professional knowledge.

Children are joyful and innocence. Being able to teach them is a fun and challenging job. HKCT Institute of Higher Education’s Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Inclusive Education) incorporates the elements of inclusive education and focuses on training professional knowledge. It teaches in Chinese and allows me to understand the curriculum and master the skills of early childhood education more easily. Also, I have a basic understanding of special early childhood education after taking the programme. The design of the curriculum is closely related with actual teaching work. It allows me to apply the knowledge I have learned to my future career. Being able to pass on the knowledge I have learned to children, and being able to apply what I have learned, makes me very satisfied!

When I was studying in the secondary school, I met a social worker through participating in voluntary activities that inspired me to think of my future career as a social worker. So, I applied for the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) Programme offered by Gratia Christian College. The Pastor in my church nominated me to apply for the “Centaline Gratia Scholarship”. After the release of the HKDSE Examination results, I enrolled in the programme and was awarded the scholarship after passing the interview.

In the past, I thought I was just an ordinary student. However, this scholarship not only recognizes my academic performance, but more importantly, it gives me a motivation to move forward to achieve my goal. As the Bible says, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” (Phil 3:13-14), I wish I will be a servant leader to serve the College and the others in the coming days.

First of all, I would like to thank the Government for giving me the Best Progress Award this year on the recommendation of my College.  I am sure there are many others who are more deserving of this than myself.  Still, I see the award as a token of recognition for my hard work.  It gives me immense satisfaction and means a great deal to me.

My performance in the first semester of my university studies was so poor that I began to wonder if I should drop out early.  But thanks to the encouragement and support of my teachers, I realised that everyone runs into problems at some point in their life and when this happens, we should rise to challenges instead of running away.  I gradually got to the root of my problems, stopped slacking and took every course seriously.  I actively took notes in class, and, to compensate for my poor memory, reviewed what I learnt at home to consolidate my learning.  My academic performance improved as a result.

Those who work tirelessly are blessed with good fortune.  I have started to believe in the old saying of “Heaven rewards the diligent”.  Last year was a meaningful year and it went by in a blink as I found a renewed zeal for my studies.  Apart from achieving academic progress, I have seen myself growing day by day.  Now, I am no longer a slacker and I strive for improvement every day.  I will brave whatever challenges that lie ahead of me and chart a new course by giving full play to my potential.

I like trying out new things and I like playing sports.  I used to be a member of the basketball team in my secondary school.  It was in a PE lesson that I was first introduced to kin-ball.  That was an eye-opening experience as kin-ball is a team sport with its unique mechanics.  I have been in love with it ever since.  Kin-ball is the ultimate spectator sport because of the huge size of the ball.  However, it is not popular in Hong Kong and only a handful of local schools have their own kin-ball teams.  With little room for the sport to develop, I thought of giving up the idea of becoming a kin-ball player.  Fortunately, my basketball coach was also coaching kin-ball at the time, and the school wanted to find out if kin-ball had the potential to become a major sport.  So our school basketball team took part in a kin-ball novice competition and the rest is history.

I have been playing kin-ball for a year now and have never missed a single training session no matter where or when it is held.  I enjoy collaborating with my teammates and relish the victory of a well-played game.  I have competed in many local competitions.  Win or lose, each match reveals my weaknesses and motivates me to overcome them.  I have greatly improved my skills and become a stronger player over time.

In 2019, I was drafted by the Hong Kong U19 team to play in a kin-ball competition in Singapore.  I was thrilled because it was an honour representing Hong Kong, not to mention my first-ever appearance in an overseas competition.  As team leader, I was nervous and feeling the pressure before the matches.  I made a string of careless mistakes at the beginning, costing the team precious points.  But then I calmed myself down, hit my stride and led the team to the top of the podium.  It was not all about the trophy, though.  Competitions present valuable opportunities for me to test my skills against other players, as well as teaching me how to control emotions and handle stress.

I am privileged to be awarded the Talent Development Scholarship.  It is a recognition of the efforts I put into the sport, and it prompts me to keep working hard.  Playing kin-ball is one of the turning points of my life, and being picked for the Hong Kong team was beyond my wildest dream.  What I want to say is that everyone has talent.  You will find yours someday, so do not give up easily as you may be the next shining star.

I’ve learnt a lot from this programme. I am glad that I have acquired both IT and business knowledge from the courses. Moreover, I have strengthened my problem-solving skills through different trainings and practice.

I am grateful to be one of the recipients of scholarship. Gratia Christian College has provided a favorable learning environment for me to study in a field that I am deeply interested in. Overseas exchange programs and local extra-curricular activities deliver valuable knowledge and insights from global perspectives equipping me with both concepts and practical skills of social work. I have a fruitful and enjoyable learning experience at Gratia Christian College. Placements and internships certainly encourage me to help others and contribute to the society. Also, lectures inspire me for further improvements in my current studies. I hope I will be able to help those underprivileged groups to achieve their aspirations after my graduation.

The programme Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) – Hotel Management organized by CIHE has given me a big picture of my study plan and future career path. I have gained extensive knowledge about the relevant job skills and ethics in the hospitality industry in these practical and professional courses. The teachers are gladly willing to have interactions with students and we are welcome to raise questions and have discussions together after class. And hence, my learning performance has greatly improved and I was also recommended by the school to receive the Best Progress Scholarship awarded by the Education Bureau which inspires me to study harder.

In our college, professors are very enthusiastic and friendly; they pay much attention to the progress of our studies. They also give us the necessary care about our campus life and needs.

Classmates at NYC are not only my nice groupmates when doing projects but also buddies in enjoying the college life. It is my pleasure to be the president of the student union for academic year 2017/18. The college gives me many opportunities to broaden my horizons; I was the master of ceremonies for the 2017/18 NYC inauguration ceremony. I also have the chance to carry out significant and successful events such as the Orientation Camp and the Snowy Mooncake Workshop. Later on, there will be a singing contest and handicraft workshop.

The College organizes many co-curricular and extracurricular activities every year. I am much honored to be runner-up in the writing competition and New Year greeting card design competition and third place in the table tennis competition. Apart from competition, the college also encourages students to participate in the charitable activities, off-campus competitions, overseas exchanges, and internship placements. I am ICAC and HKCAA Ambassador of NYC and have the opportunity to meet other ambassadors of other Colleges.

As a student from mainland China, I think it was quite challenging for me to pick up study when I first came to Hong Kong two years ago, mainly because of the language barrier. But with the enthusiasm for study and help from peers and lecturers, I have overcome the difficulty in learning and improved my Cantonese and English. With my lectures’ guidance and my own effort, I have been able to be included in the University’s President List for two consecutive years.

Apart from academic study, the University has provided various extra-curricular activities to develop my abilities in different aspects. For example, to improve my speaking skill and presentation skill, I joined in my university’s Putonghua Debate Team and Recitation Team. Besides, to accumulate my work experience and social experience, I had an internship at a bank this summer. And now, I have a placement at People’s Effort Credit Union in Hong Kong. What’s more, to help the students of Years 1 and 2 in our department, I joined the Peer Support Group at the beginning of this semester, and I am now helping my mentees to tackle their learning problems every week. In fact, when I successfully help them to solve a problem, it gives me a great sense of achievement!

Oscar started the programme, jointly offered by LiPACE and HK Disneyland, in 2015. His service at the Disneyland Hotel during his internship won customers’ acclaims. “The 400-hour internship passed rather quickly as I learned something new and interesting every day.” Many of the courses were taught by management staff of HK Disneyland, and Oscar was most excited about subjects related to theme park operation and hotel management. He aspired to pursue a Bachlor’s Degree at OUHK before joining the industry.

I was one of the successful applicants who had the chance to work as an intern in Cambodia in summer 2016, thanks to the internship programme offered by the School.

During the 3-month internship period, I was required to work in the Hong Kong Office and the Song Saa Private Island Resort in Cambodia for one and a half months in each of the two locations.

When I was working in the head office, I was responsible for drafting reports and proposals in marketing and research areas. In the Song Saa Resort, I had worked in the Guest Experience Department to welcome guests and help them to check-in. I had also worked in the Food and Beverage Team where I learnt making drinks and serving guests. I have learnt a lot of hospitality skills during this rewarding internship, not only the operational knowledge that related to my study, but also the concept behind running a hotel.

Apart from the practical knowledge that I learnt from this internship, I have also learnt how to solve problems when facing challenges. I have improved my communication skills and made a lot of new friends. All my colleagues were very friendly and nice to me. Working as an intern in a foreign country was an amazing and memorable experience to me. I really enjoyed this internship opportunity.
