Moreover, this programme also provides me an internship opportunity. This precious arrangement allows me to gain knowledge in the real-life work environment, which is not able to be obtained from text books, and increases my essential work experience of the industry. As a result, this programme allows me to obtain a wealth of knowledge both in theory and actual work experience.

Having graduated from Higher Diploma in Tourism Management (Hospitality), I am now working as a DEMI CHEF in a 2-stars Michelin French restaurant in The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong. Knowing my passion in cooking, HKCT’s teachers encouraged me to participate in mega cooking competition “Gourmet Lady Master Chefs.Global Challenge” to broaden my horizon. With the support of the college, I eventually landed an internship at the Michelin restaurant, even though the restaurant only occasionally offers internship to local students. I embarked my career as a preparation cook and, with great honour, I was promoted every year. It is concrete evidence that reflects the pluralistic nature of experiential learning in my study and proves the programme is in line with the vocational and professional education and training.

Learning in Hong Kong College of Technology was a pleasant experience for me. I have learnt different development approaches for different kinds of apps and games in this programme. I developed a web with my classmates to promote smart spending in ‘The Chin Family Personal Finance Ambassador Programme’ and won the ‘Excellent Financial Education Project Bronze Award’. I enjoyed the internship opportunity to work as a mobile app developer in the Science Park. I had the honour to receive the EDB ‘SPSS Outstanding Performance Scholarship’. After graduation, I chose to further study and major in computing and interactive entertainment at university to pursue my dream of being a game developer.

The curriculum of the two-year Higher Diploma programme is intensive. Besides two main modules, sport coaching and management, it also includes sports trauma, individual and team sports training and sports psychology. The Programme has improved my communication and leadership skills of being a coach. I have come to realise that a coach is not just teaching sports, but also provides trainees with support and suitable training advices after understanding their needs.

Apart from the curriculum, Department of Student Development also provides us with different activities and services in order to explore our potential, broaden our social network, and even let us apply what we learnt from classroom to show our strengths. The teaching staff of HKCT are just like our friends. They help us patiently to solve our problems and difficulties by sharing their valuable experiences with us.

Articulated into PolyU’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Work

Determined to become a social worker since she was a secondary student, Ka-mei learned that HKCC’s Higher Diploma in Social Work is a reputable programme, through which she hoped to realise her aspiration. She thought the learning environment in secondary schools was completely different from that in tertiary institutions, so she was concerned about adaptation in the beginning. Fortunately, all her lecturers and classmates were very friendly, helping her ease herself into the new environment. She said the programme provided a lot of internship opportunities for students to choose their favourite one that suited their interests. Even if they could not participate in all internship activities, they could learn about the real workplace from lecturers’ sharing regarding their rich frontline experience. She particularly mentioned the communication platform provided by the College for students to express their opinions, such as class schedules and arrangements for subject selection. Ka-mei was honoured on the HKCC Director’s List and received the PolyU HKCC Outstanding Student Award (Bronze Award).

However, through my studies in LIFE, I realised that LIFE is enriched with Scholarships, Mentor programmes, Extra-curricular activities, and so forth that fulfil personal interest while fostering inclusion.

I am truly extraordinary by how LIFE teachers concerned about us. They are eager to offer help in any aspects, either academically, financially or in sports. No doubts, I did face challenges and obstacles during my studies but LIFE has given me a chance to solve my problems and sharpen my skills in my field of choice. I am a graduate of BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance at Hong Kong Institute of Technology. I failed the Chinese Language in 2015 HKDSE, while HKIT has provided me an opportunity to study a degree programme offered jointly by the Institute and the UK University.

In the first year of studies, the careful guidance and teaching of the lecturers allowed me to achieve a good academic result - and I was honoured to be awarded the Outstanding Performance Scholarship. In the second year, I joined the exchange programme to Teesside University in the U.K. The teaching style in the U.K. was quite different from that in Hong Kong, it was more interactive with emphasis in the students’ critical thinking skills. Apart from the academic support, the university also provided assistance in helping international students adapt to the life in the U.K. It was really a fruitful and enjoyable time.

Zack has always been determined to embark on a career in aircraft engineering, so he decided to enrol in HKCC’s Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in order to prepare himself for further studies and career development in his chosen field. “The programme not only imparted knowledge of mechanical engineering to students, but also required students to understand real-world operations so as to consolidate the knowledge learned. Apart from using the Metal and Wood Workshop, we also attended classes at the Industrial Centre of PolyU. Going through different practical training subjects and practice sessions in the labs, we were able to acquire the specialised skills of our field.”

In their final group project, the mission of Zack and his teammates was that of designing a robotic arm model. Starting with purchasing materials and parts up to the final assembly, they had to pay meticulous attention to every detail in every step of the process. “Although we encountered a lot of difficulties along the way, we were able to solve them one by one, thanks to the gentle guidance from our lecturers.” Zack said that the programme he studied at HKCC provided him with a firm foundation in knowledge and theory, and helped him adapt quickly to his university studies.

I am Joanna Tse, major in Supply Chain Management. Throughout this 4-year journey, I found my career goal and my friends. There are lots of opportunities which nurture me to be a better person and a supply chain management professional.

I joined various mentorship programmes to meet with different industrial professionals, they gave me lots of advises on my career development and personal growth. With the support of my department, I won the 1st-runner up in both the CILTHK Student Day and CILTHK YMC Pitch Competition; not only my profile was flourished, but more industrial insights.

Apart from career development, HSMC also provided me plenty of opportunities to develop and enhance my personal skills. Being the captain of HSMC Women’s Volleyball Team, I learnt to be a more cheerful and considerate leader. Teammates I met are not just my friends, but my life buddies who always encourage and support me.

I enjoyed my college life in HSMC as this place provided me a lot of opportunities to learn and to grow. As a graduate, I do hope that you can treasure the time of being a student, seize every single opportunity to try, to fail, and to grow. Thank you.

When I was a freshman in the Accounting and Banking programme, I dreamed of becoming a financial controller in a multinational corporation. During my four years of undergraduate studies, I learned a lot of accounting and business knowledge. Upon graduation, I joined AIA through an internship programme. 

I am grateful for what I learned and experienced at Chu Hai. Although there were some language barriers at the beginning, my teachers were always there to look after me and help me adapt to the new environment. This is where I learned how to treat people with warmth and sincerity.

I have been a Wealth Management Manager at AIA for more than two years. I have become one of the top 20 agents among the 14000 representatives in AIA Hong Kong & Macao in both 2016 and 2017. I am good at planning from my clients’ perspectives and thus developed a close relationship with them. I will always remember what I learned not only in classes but also from the culture of the College and my kind teachers.

Having graduated from Higher Diploma in Tourism Management (Hospitality), I am now working as a DEMI CHEF in a 2-stars Michelin French restaurant in The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong. Knowing my passion in cooking, HKCT’s teachers encouraged me to participate in mega cooking competition “Gourmet Lady Master Chefs.Global Challenge” to broaden my horizon. With the support of the college, I eventually landed an internship at the Michelin restaurant, even though the restaurant only occasionally offers internship to local students. I embarked my career as a preparation cook and, with great honour, I was promoted every year. It is concrete evidence that reflects the pluralistic nature of experiential learning in my study and proves the programme is in line with the vocational and professional education and training.

The Programme has improved my communication and leadership skills of being a coach. I have come to realise that a coach is not just teaching sports, but also provides trainees with support and suitable training advices after understanding their needs.

Apart from the curriculum, Department of Student Development also provides us with different activities and services in order to explore our potential, broaden our social network, and even let us apply what we learnt from classroom to show our strengths. The teaching staff of HKCT are just like our friends. They help us patiently to solve our problems and difficulties by sharing their valuable experiences with us.

Determined to become a social worker since she was a secondary student, Ka-mei learned that HKCC’s Higher Diploma in Social Work is a reputable programme, through which she hoped to realise her aspiration. She thought the learning environment in secondary schools was completely different from that in tertiary institutions, so she was concerned about adaptation in the beginning. Fortunately, all her lecturers and classmates were very friendly, helping her ease herself into the new environment. She said the programme provided a lot of internship opportunities for students to choose their favourite one that suited their interests. Even if they could not participate in all internship activities, they could learn about the real workplace from lecturers’ sharing regarding their rich frontline experience. She particularly mentioned the communication platform provided by the College for students to express their opinions, such as class schedules and arrangements for subject selection. Ka-mei was honoured on the HKCC Director’s List and received the PolyU HKCC Outstanding Student Award (Bronze Award).

In the second year, I joined the exchange programme to Teesside University in the U.K. The teaching style in the U.K. was quite different from that in Hong Kong, it was more interactive with emphasis in the students’ critical thinking skills. Zack has always been determined to embark on a career in aircraft engineering, so he decided to enrol in HKCC’s Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in order to prepare himself for further studies and career development in his chosen field. “The programme not only imparted knowledge of mechanical engineering to students, but also required students to understand real-world operations so as to consolidate the knowledge learned. Apart from using the Metal and Wood Workshop, we also attended classes at the Industrial Centre of PolyU. Going through different practical training subjects and practice sessions in the labs, we were able to acquire the specialised skills of our field.”

In their final group project, the mission of Zack and his teammates was that of designing a robotic arm model. Starting with purchasing materials and parts up to the final assembly, they had to pay meticulous attention to every detail in every step of the process. “Although we encountered a lot of difficulties along the way, we were able to solve them one by one, thanks to the gentle guidance from our lecturers.” Zack said that the programme he studied at HKCC provided him with a firm foundation in knowledge and theory, and helped him adapt quickly to his university studies.
